(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. Late war fine content D.S., 1p. 4to., Berlin, Jan. 19, 1945, only two days after Hitler had moved into the Fuhrerbunker beneath the Reichs Chancellery in Berlin. Hitler makes four late appointments of some of his most important generals: Gen. JOSEF HARPE (1887-1968), Supreme Commander of Army Group A (Center) is relieved of his command and placed on the Fuhrer-Reserve due to the inability of German forces to stop the Soviet Vistula–Oder Offensive; Gen. FERDINAND SCHORNER (1892-1973), Supreme Commander of Army Group North (Kurland) is made Supreme Commander of Army Group Center defending Czechoslovakia and the upper reaches of the River Oder; Gen. LOTHAR RENDULIC (1887-1971), Army Commander in Norway and Commander of the 20th Mountain Army is made Supreme Commander, Army Group Kurland; and Gen. FRANZ BOHME (1885-1947), in the Fuhrer-Reserves, is made Wehrmacht Commander in Norway and Commander of the 20th Mountain Army. The document is co-signed by Gen. WILHELM BURGDORF (1895-1945), Hitler's Chief Adjutant who escorted Rommel when the latter was forced to commit suicide and sat on the tribunal that condemned Hermann Fegelein to death. As for Bohme, after being captured in Norway, he was charged with war crimes committed in Serbia during his control of the region in 1941. Bohme killed a hundred Serbs for every German killed, and fifty for every German wounded; this resulted in the massacre of thousands of civilians. When his extradition to Yugoslavia seemed imminent, Böhme committed suicide. Fine, sold with a 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" Hoffman portrait of Hitler, postally used in 1939.
