(1844 - 1935) American army officer and explorer of Ellesmere and Greenland where he lost 19 of 25 men while awaiting relief. Good association T.L.S. as Chief Signal Officer, 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., Dec. 2, 1898, to Gen. HERMAN HAUPT (1817-1905), the architect of the strategic use of railroads by the Union army during the Civil War. In part: "I return herewith, the very valuable original photograph of the Chattahoochie [sic] bridge, an enormous structure that was built by the Construction Corps under your command in an unprecedented short space of time..." He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds and slight toning to the edges, else very good.
