(1887 – 1973) Marine Corps four-star general, commanded the 1st Marine Division to victory at Guadalcanal. For his actions in the Solomon Islands campaign, he received the Medal of Honor. Vandegrift later served as the 18th Commandant of the Marine Corps. Pair if signed items, includes: T.L.S. as Marines Commandant, 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 20, 1947 to a retired reserve officer. In part: "...Together we accomplished our missions, however difficult they may have been. Together we developed the Marine Corps into the finest of all fighting forces. It could not have been done without you. Your patriotism and fine devotion to duty have been an inspiration...We always think of you as one of our own..."; WITH S.P., 3 1/2" x 4 3/4" bust photo signed at bottom, poor contrast. Two pieces.
