MONTY HOPES A SOLDIER FRIEND WILL "KILL THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CHINKS" Fine content A.L.S. "Montgomery of Alamein", 2pp. 4to., [London], March 1, 1953, to Lt. Jeffry Hernu of the Royal Horse Artillery. In part: "I was very glad to get your letter which began on 5 Feb, when on the "E. Sang', and ended in the front line in Korea: or thereabouts. You seem to have had a most interesting 'approach march' to the battle. Personally, I am delighted you are now doing your stuff on active service; and I am more delighted that you now agree that I was right to get you posted to Korea. I never had any doubt about it myself!!..." Montgomery details his latest travels to Scotland and upcoming visit to the United States, as well as the preparations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and continues: "...I hope you will put your mortar shells in the right place and kill the maximum number of Chinks and North Koreans." He signs at the conclusion in blue ink. Shows original mailing folds, with a faint paperclip mark at top left, else very good. The original transmittal envelope is also present, with Montgomery again executing his signature "Field Marshal Montgomery" in blue ink at the top edge of the verso. A small tear just barely misses the second "m" in his name, else very good. Two signed pieces.
