John J. Audubon color lithograph "Cervus Richardsonii" from the imperial edition of "Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America." Drawn from nature by Audubon. Lithographed, printed & colored by J. T. Bowen, Philadelphia. Cervus Richardsonii depicts two Columbian black-tailed deer and clearly seeks to maximize scientific precision through its use of color and composition. Majestic antlers appear stark and striking against the pale background in the upper half of the print. Bowen's colorful printing captures the nuances in value that simulate realistic form and texture. Overall dimensions 21 1/2" x 27 1/2". Mounted, with a small repaired chip at upper-right and a tiny marginal tear at left, some light mat burn, still very good. Estimated accordingly.
